I smile and reply "I'm fine,"
which is a big fat fib.
Most of the time, I lie,
assuming those people don't really care.
Who wants to hear "I'm terrible?"
It makes me wonder about others
and whether or not they're lying
when they say, "I'm fine. You?"
Maybe they're angry, sad or exhausted
but too afraid to share it.
What does "fine" mean to them?
What do you really mean when you say, "I'm fine?"
